A sustainable flower farm

A small scale farm with a big heart

We believe in sustainable British flowers and we work hard to produce top quality blooms for wholesale and retail customers. Working with nature we respect the life around us adopting an organic approach with minimal soil disturbance and alternatives to single use plastics. Our customers enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the farm, often spending hours with us and returning with family and friends to share the joy of the flowers. a family run business, growing our flowers here on our 5 acre farm in Marden, Kent. We have called in favours from all our friends and family in setting up our flower farm and we are very grateful for all their love and support.

Our reservoir

One of the first tasks we undertook was to dig our 900,000L reservoir. We use this harvested rainwater to water our beds via an automated watering system. Almost as soon as it was dug the life started to appear, we have ducks in the house and moor hens that nest in the reeds that appeared on the feet of birds. A healthy population of frogs, dragonflies and pond skaters call this place their home - adding to the biodiversity of the field and helping to maintain a balance which supports our organic methods

Our commitment to sustainable horticulture

Peat-free

We've always been peat-free and we will continue to look for sustainable compost options. We currently use green waste compost to improve our Dahlia beds.

Nature in mind

Our field has weeds! We don't use systemic weed killers or harsh chemicals on our field or in our polytunnels. Instead we try to work with as little disturbance to the soil to encourage good soil health. We created a reservoir pond for our watering and this is a haven for wildlife as well as a sustainable source of water for our Dahlias. Healthy plants with natural predators should be able to cope with the odd munch by a snail or aphid so we try to let nature do it's thing as much as we can.

Plastic use

It's not easy to avoid plastic altogether in horticulture but we are trying. We use second-hand pots in our polytunnel and we take care of these so that they can last us many many years. The plants we sell are packaged in Oxo-Biodegradable Hadopots. These degrade to leave no plastic residue at all and they can be re-used too. We use wooden plant labels in our plants for sale and on the farm we use recycled plastic labels, taking good care of these to get as many years use out of them as possible. We are researching alternatives all the time, currently on trial are rubber trays for cuttings made from sustainable and fair trade rubber plantations.

Soil health

Using a minimal dig ethos (who likes digging anyway!), we care about the health of our soil and the living organisms that call it home. We use organic matter to improve the health of our clay soil and let the worms do their thing. Green manures add nutrients and bulk to the soil and all added plant feed is organic (either seaweed extract or our own chicken poo!)
